Charles McAlister arrived in Australia from Ireland in 1866 at the age of 22 and in 1887 he bought some allotments of Crown land that were offered for sale in the area now called Engadine. He and his wife Christina travelled to Europe in 1910 and when they returned to New South Wales they named their estate Engadine after the valley in Switzerland which they had visited. They felt that the Swiss valley had similar-looking hills and wildflowers.
