Gold in Victoria

Koch's Pioneer mine in Bendigo

(Photo © D. Nutting) poppet-headThe poppet head in the photo was used between 1900-1920 at Koch's Pioneer mine in Bendigo. A poppet head was used to haul men and equipment up and down the mine shaft. The red container visible at ground level is the baling tank used for removing water from the mine. Koch's Pioneer Mine was in operation from 1871-1912 and produced 139,623 ounces of gold. In 1995 this poppet head was re-erected here at Victoria Hill.

In 1908 a mine at Victoria Hill had the world's deepest shaft - 4,478 feet or 1,365 metres.
